The Long Eaton Rambling Club has been dissolved. Present events up until Christmas 2023 namely the Christmas Dinner on the 3rd December and the fuddle on the 13th December will go ahead as planned. Also the holiday to Minehead in September 2024 will also go ahead as planned. This website will also stay open until October 2024, but only for further new details about the Minehead holiday. The Rambling Club is a group for all ages* who go countryside walking on footpaths in Derbyshire and the surrounding area. We also sometimes use coaches to visit and walk in other parts of the country. Walking holidays and social events are also organised.
Membership of the Rambling Club is £10 a year (subject to revision each year) and includes a bi-monthly programme of walks, coaches and social events. Anyone interested is invited to try a few walks before they pay their membership. Walks on the same day are sometimes graded on the programme. 'A' rambles can be strenuous, long mileage, and the going can be tough and hilly at times. 'B' rambles cover shorter distances at a steadier pace although not necessarily in very flat areas. Walk distance can range from about 6 miles to well over 10 miles. *These walk distances may be too much for very young children. Evening walks are easier and much shorter. It is advisable to come fully prepared for the outdoors with good walking shoes or boots. Packed lunch should be taken on all day rambles. In the interest of good practice walk leaders do have the right to refuse to take anyone on a ramble who is not wearing suitable clothing for the time of year. Special coaches are sometimes booked to different destinations combining walking and social visits for those who do not wish to join the walking party. Indoor social events are held once a month from September to April at St. John's Church Hall, College Street, Long Eaton.
For Sunday rambles we meet with cars at Long Eaton Town Hall Car Park, The Green, Midland Street, Long Eaton, Derbyshire (near Asda Supermarket). Car transport to walk starting points is normally shared by arrangement with car drivers, but only when payment is made towards the cost of fuel. Special coaches pick-up from various places in the Long Eaton area. For individual walk enquiries please contact the walk leader on the telephone number given. WEEK AT MINEHEAD (SOMERSET COAST, EXMOOR & QUANTOCK HILLS)
SEPTEMBER NEXT YEAR 2024 (TRANSPORT BY CAR)
The holiday will be based in Minehead, a seaside town located on the A39 road midway between Bridgwater and Lynton on the Somerset coast. Many probably think of Minehead as a modern resort of hotels, guest houses and wide streets, but these are simply 19th century additions to the old village. Here narrow cobbled lanes lead between brightly coloured thatched cottages to the old parish church. Another old part of the town exists around the attractive harbour where old fishermen's cottages give little indication of its former importance as an exporter of wool and herrings.
Bed and breakfast will be arranged at the Glendower, a large Edwardian terraced guest house situated in an attractive tree lined street only a very short walk away from the town centre and the sea front. Twin, double and single rooms are available, all en-suite and there is a private car park at the rear of the house. The club stayed at the Glendower back in 2015 and again in 2019 and is without doubt one of the best B&Bs we have had over many years. For evening meals Minehead has many restaurants and pubs to choose from and usually the first evening is pre-booked at a recommended place for the entire party. The cost of accommodation for seven days bed and breakfast will be in the region of £350 per person. Hopefully the guest house will still be available for party booking in September next year 2024.
The circular walks in and around the Minehead area will include paths along the coast and over the nearby Quantock Hills and Exmoor. All will be about 8 to 9 miles, easy paced and have lunch time stops at pubs and/or tea rooms. There will be at least one midweek day without an organised walk. The following are details of the walks led from Minehead in 2019 and gives a very good idea of what the walks programme will be for the week:

- Coastal Walk & Porlock: Cars to Allerford Village (Village CP). 5 miles from Minehead. Bossington Hill and Beach, Porlock Village (lunch and pub/tearoom stop). Crawter Hill, West Luccombe. Walk 8 miles. Tearoom at the end of the walk. Leave guest house about 9.45am.
Tuesday
- Coastal Walk & Quantock Hills: Cars to East Quantoxhead Village (Church CP). 12 miles from Minehead. Bridgewater Bay, Kilve Village (lunch and pub stop), Dens Combe, Beacon Hill (view point), Smith's Combe. Walk 8 to 9 miles. Leave guest house about 9.45am.

This should give all of us a very good indication this year about the club's firm holiday intention for next year. A deposit will probably be required next year when demand for the holiday is known, the week date fixed and a firm guest house booking made.

The walk starts from Copmanthorpe, just a few miles south-west of York and follows the Ebor Way over field paths into Bishopthorpe Village where we have our lunch stop and a choice of three pubs. Soon after leaving the village we pass close to the Bishop's Palace and it's grand Gatehouse (1241-1769), home of the Archbishops of York. We then join the field path alongside the River Ouse leading into the centre of York. The walk is a very easy 6 to 7 miles and will finish in the centre of York.

The walk starts from Copmanthorpe, just a few miles south-west of York and follows the Ebor Way over field paths into Bishopthorpe Village where we have our lunch stop and a choice of three pubs. Soon after leaving the village we pass close to the Bishop's Palace and it's grand Gatehouse (1241-1769), home of the Archbishops of York. We then join the field path alongside the River Ouse leading into the centre of York. The walk is a very easy 6 to 7 miles and will finish in the centre of York.
